Cherita Brent, better known as “Rita B.” was born and raised in Jackson, MS. She began playing drum set in church with her mother on piano as a young girl, not knowing it would develop into something much bigger. She began her professional drumming career before the age of 21. She served in the 41st Army National Guard Band for 9 years, ending her service in 2014. While at Jackson State University, she began her Radio Broadcasting career. She currently serves the state of Mississippi as a morning show host and producer for multiple radio shows on Mississippi Public Broadcasting Think Radio.
After years of building respective careers in music and Radio Broadcasting, she decided to give stand-up comedy a try (an area of entertainment she’s always secretly been interested in). She performed her first ever stand-up comedy set in front of a small crowd in Jackson, MS at an open mic event in 2013 and has now transformed this formerly secret desire into a blossoming career.
In December 2013, Rita B. was awarded “Novice Comedienne of the Year” by the Power of the Mic Comedy Series. In September 2014, she advanced to the finals of the Shaquille O’Neal All-Star Comedy Competition in Arlington, Texas. In May 2015, Rita B. won 99 Jams WJMI’s, “Standing Ovation Tour Opening Act Contest.” She was the opening act for the “Standing Ovation Comedy Tour” featuring Sommore, Arnez J., Earthquake, and Don “DC” Curry at the Jackson Convention Complex. In June 2016, Rita won first place at an open mic competition at the Star Dome Comedy Club. Shortly after winning this competition, she was introduced to and auditioned for Comedian, Radio Host, and TV Star – Rickey Smiley. She began touring with Rickey in July 2016 as a feature comedienne on the tour. She’s currently still on tour with him.
Locally, Rita is still growing a fan base and performing at various venues around town to sharpen her skills and entertain loyal supporters. In June 2015, she hosted her first comedy special, “Rita B. is the New Black,” at the historic Alamo Theater in Jackson. In July 2016, she hosted a second special, “All Laughs Matter,” again at the Alamo Theater to a sold out crowd. In November 2016, she was the first speaker at the TedxJackson Women’s Conference in Jackson. She was the opening act for the legendary comedian, Dick Gregory, in January 2017. She’s currently the headlining comedienne for the “Condoms and Comedy” Tour, an HIV awareness comedy tour.
Rita plans to compete in more comedy competitions to gain exposure, and eventually make her way to late night television for an appearance or opportunity to be a comedy writer. She plans to produce more stand-up comedy specials and land a movie role someday soon. Rita’s social media presence is also growing. She has organically earned more than 11,000 followers on her personal Facebook page and millions of combined views of her videos. In less than 4 years, she’s accomplished a lot and doesn’t plan on slowing down anytime soon.
